Volume 12 · 94 words · 1815 Edition

JAMES-PHILIP, a learned mathematician and astronomer, of the Academy of Sciences at Paris, was born in 1665. He was the son of Francis Maraldi and Angela Catharine Caffini, the sister of the famous astronomer of that name. His uncle sent him to France in 1687, where he acquired great reputation on account of his learning and observations. He made a catalogue of the fixed stars, which is more particular and exact than Bayer's; and has given a great number of curious and interesting observations in the memoirs of the academy. He died in 1729.
