in Natural History, the name of an earth famous in the earliest ages of painting, being the only white of the great painters of antiquity; and, according to Pliny's account, one of the three colours with which alone they performed all their works. From the description given of this earth it seems to be aluminous, tolerably pure, and in a state of minute division.
