one of the Sandwich islands, discovered by Captain Cook, is 162 miles in circumference. A low isthmus divides it into two circular peninsulas, of which the eastern is double the size of the western. The mountains in both rise to a great height, and may be seen at the distance of more than 30 leagues. The northern shores, like those of Owhyhee, afford no foundations, and the country presents the same appearance of verdure and fertility. The number of inhabitants is computed at about 65,000. W.
