a strong town of the Russian empire, in Livonia, with a castle and a harbour. It was taken by the Muscovites from the Danes in 1558, by the Swedes in 1581, and they defeated the Muscovites near it in 1700; but it was retaken by the Russians in 1704 by storm, and the inhabitants sent to Astrakhan.
