Volume 14 · 132 words · 1815 Edition

a post and fair town of Ireland, in the county of Tipperary, and province of Munster, 75 miles from Dublin. It is situated on a branch of the river Shannon which runs into Lough-Derg. Here stand the ruins of an old castle called Nenagh-round. Also those of an hospital founded in the year 1200, for canons following the rule of St Augustin. It was dedicated to St John the Baptist, and was usually called Teachon, or St John's house. In the reign of Henry III. a friary for conventual Franciscans was also founded here, and esteemed the richest foundation of that order in the kingdom. Here is a barrack for two troops of horse. This town was burnt on St Stephen's day, 1348, by the Irish. The fairs held here are four.
