Volume 15 · 92 words · 1815 Edition

a considerable town of Switzerland, in the canton of Bern, and capital of a bailiwick of the same name, with a castle. It stands delightfully upon the edge of the lake of Geneva, in the very point where it begins to widen, and in a most charming country commonly called Pays de Vaud. It was formerly called Colonia Equitibus Noviodunum; and, as a proof of its antiquity, several Roman inscriptions, and other ancient remains, have been frequently discovered in the outskirts of the town.
