(Pliny, Antonine, Inscriptions) ; a town of Lusitania, situated on the north side of the frith of the Tagus ; of such antiquity, that Solinus thought it was built by Ulysses ; and Mela, probably to favour this opinion, writes, according to the common copies, Ulyssipo ; both of them perhaps deceived by the similarity of sound. It was a municipium, with the surname Felicitas Julia, a privilege granted by the munificence of Augustus, (Inscriptions, Pliny). Now Lisbon, capital of Portugal, situated on the north bank of the Tagus, distant about ten miles from its mouth. See LISBON.
