a town of Germany, in Moravia, with a bishop's see, and a famous university. The public buildings are very handsome, particularly the Jesuits college. It is a populous, trading, and very strong place; and yet it was taken, with the whole garrison, by the king of Prussia in 1741. In July 1758 he besieged it again; and when he had almost taken the place he was obliged to raise the siege, to go and meet the Russian army. It is seated on the river Morave. E. Long. 17. 35. N.
