a town of England, in the county of Middlesex, on the north-west side of London, and in the highway to Kentish town. Its church is one of the prebends of St Paul's, of which cathedral some call it the mother, it being thought to be as old as that church even in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, when it is represented as weather-beaten and standing alone, without any company, though it had formerly many buildings about it. A veterinary college was established here in 1791, for the improvement of farriery, and the treatment of cattle in general.
