PANONIA, in antiquity, a festival celebrated in honour of Neptune by a concourse of people from all the cities of Ionia. It is remarkable in this festival, that if the bull offered in sacrifice happened to bellow, it was accounted an omen of divine favour; because that sound was thought to be acceptable to Neptune.
