an ancient and flourishing town of European Turkey, in the Morea, capital of a duchy, with a Greek archbishop's see. It is pretty large and populous; and the Jews, who are one-third part of the inhabitants, have four synagogues. There are several handsome mosques and Greek churches. The Jews carry on a great trade in silk, leather, honey, wax, and cheese. There are cypresses trees of a prodigious height, and excellent pomegranates, citrons, and oranges. It has been several times taken and retaken, and it is just now in the hands of the Turks. It is seated in E. Long. 21. 45. N. Lat. 38. 17.

PATRICA, a town of Italy, in the territory of the church, and in the Campagna of Rome, towards the sea-coast, and eight miles east of Ostia. About a mile from this place is a hill called Monte de Livano, which some have thought to be the ancient Lavinium founded by Æneas.
