Volume 16 · 59 words · 1815 Edition

mentioned by Jeremiah and Ezekiel, appears from the context to be meant of a part of Egypt. Bocchard thinks it denotes the Higher Egypt; the Septuagint translate it the country of Pathrus; in Pliny we have the Nomos Pathurites in the Thebais; in Ptolemy, Pathyris, probably the metropolis. From the Hebrew appellation Patros comes the gentilitial name Pathrusim, (Moses).
