PUTAMINEÆ, (from putamen, "a shell") the name of the 27th order of Linnaeus's fragments of a natural method; consisting of a few genera of plants allied in habit, whose fleshy seed-vessel or fruit is frequently covered with a hard woody shell. See Botany.
