a term used by some writers for a demon who assumes the shape of a woman, and as such lies with a man; in which sense it stands opposed to incubus, which was a demon in form of a man, that lies with a woman. But the truth is, the succubus is only a species of the nightmare. See MEDICINE, No 329.
