a royal borough on the east coast of the county of Caithness. It is small, and the streets narrow, but a few of its buildings are an ornament to the place. The present harbour is very inconvenient, but it is proposed to erect a new one, which will be of great importance to the safety of navigation along that coast. The population of the whole parish in 1793 amounted to 5000.
