a town in Kent, with a market on Fridays. It is seated on the river Thames, and of great note for its fine docks and yards, where men of war are built; as also for its vast magazines of great guns, mortars, bombs, cannon-balls, powder, and other warlike stores. It has likewise an academy, where young officers are instructed in the military art; the population in 1801 exceeded 9000. It is nine miles east of London. E. Long. o. 10. N. Lat. 51. 30.
