passionate ardour for any person or cause. It is most frequently used to denote a strong and warm attachment to the distinguishing doctrines or worship of some particular sect of Christians. Thus we say, a zealous Calvinist, Arminian, or Papist; though we may likewise with the greatest propriety say of an upright and benevolent man, that he is zealous of good works.
