a department in the south-east of France, adjoining to Switzerland. The surface is rocky and mountainous, and affords scarcely one-third of arable land. They raise many cattle, and have a few trifling manufactures. The territorial extent of this department is 289 square leagues, or 549,995 hectares. The population in 1817 was 322,668. Bourg is the chief town.
