Amictus, among ecclesiastical writers, the uppermost garment anciently worn by the clergy; the other five being the alba, singulum, stola, manipulus, and plauta. The amictus was a linen garment, of a square figure, covering the head, neck, and shoulders, and buckled, or clasped before the breast. It is still worn by the religious abroad.
