one of the Comora islands, lying between the north end of Madagascar and the coast of Zanguebar in Africa, from Lat. 10° to 15° S. It is inhabited by Moors, who trade with divers parts of the continent, in cattle, fruits, and other commodities of the island; which they exchange for calicoes and other cotton cloths. The houses here are built of stone, and lime made of calcined oyster shells; with which the walls and roof are plastered in a very elegant manner. The government of Angazya is a pure aristocracy; the island being subject to ten lords, who have all the title of Sultan. The people are very careful of their women; never permitting strangers to see them, without permission from a sultan, or an order which the stranger brings with him. Many of them read and write Arabic with great facility; and some even understand Portuguese, which they learn from their intercourse with Mosambique, whither they trade in vessels of 40 tons burden.
