by some called Lorta, a town of Lower Albania; in Turkey in Europe, with a Greek archbishop's see. It is a pretty large town, and contains, according to Mr Hobhouse, about 5000 inhabitants, of which less than a fourth are Mahometans. It had formerly a castle, but this has been suffered to fall to decay. Arta is situated at the distance of seven or eight miles from the gulf to which it gives name. The neighbouring grounds produce grapes, tobacco, oats, and maize; and there is some little trade in wool, cotton, cloths, &c. E. Long. 21. 15. N. Lat. 39. 25.
