ASSUMPTIVE ARMS

ASSUMPTIVE ARMS, in Heraldry, are such as a person has a right to assume, with the approbation of his sovereign, and of the heralds: thus, if a person who has no right by blood, and has no coat of arms, Assurance shall captivate in any lawful war any gentleman, nobleman, or prince, he and his heirs are, in that case, entitled to bear the shield of that prisoner for ever.
