a town in France, in Lower Auvergne, now the department of Cantal, seated on a small river called Jourdana. It is one of the most considerable towns of the province, and contained 10,332 inhabitants in 1815. The castle is very high, and commands the town. The abbot was lord of Aurillac, and had episcopal jurisdiction; and was also chief justice of the town. This place is remarkable for having produced several great men. E. Long. 2. 33. N. Lat. 44. 55.
