one of the Molucca islands, belonging to the Dutch; situated under the equator, in E. Long. 125°. It is the largest of all the small Molucca islands, being 54 miles long, and 20 broad. It produces gold dust and sago, besides the usual tropical fruits. The inhabitants are Malay Mahometans, and are governed by a chief who was once very powerful.
