a large and strong town, capital of Badajoz Estremadura in Spain. It is seated on the river Guadiana, over which there is a fine bridge built by the Romans. On this bridge the Portuguese were defeated in 1661, by Don John of Austria. The population of Badajoz is computed at 14,500 inhabitants. It was taken by storm by the British under Lord Wellington, after a memorable conflict, on the 6th April 1812.
