or BALLIOL, Sir John de, founder of Baliol-college in Oxford, was the son of Hugh Baliol, of Bernard's castle, in the diocese of Durham; and was a person very eminent for his power and riches. During the contests and wars between King Henry III. and his barons, he firmly adhered to the king. In 1263, he began the foundation and endowment of Baliol college, which was afterwards perfected by his widow. He died in the year 1269.

BALLIOL, or BOILLIOL, John, the competitor with Robert Bruce for the crown of Scotland, was the great grandson of David earl of Huntington, third son of King David I. See SCOTLAND.
