an ancient town of Portugal, in the province of Alentejo. It is seated in a very agreeable and fruitful plain, remarkable for excellent wine. There are three gates remaining, which are of Roman architecture, and a great many Roman antiquities are dug out of the earth. The town has a strong castle for its defence, and is situated in W. Long. 7° 20'. N. Lat. 37° 58'. It was taken from the Moors in 1162.
