a province of Italy, in the Austro-Venetian territories. It is bounded on the east by the Bressan, on the north by the Valteline, on the west and Bergamo-south by the Milanese. It extends about 36 leagues from north to south, and 30 from east to west. It is watered by several rivers, which render it very fertile, and particularly it produces a great number of chestnuts. It has mines of iron, and quarries of marble, and other stones of which they make milestones. There are a great number of villages, but no city except Bergamo the capital. The people are very industrious, and make the best of their natural productions. They are well stocked with cattle, and make fine tapestry. Their language is the most corrupt of any in Italy.
