BETROTHMENT

Volume 3 · 50 words · 1823 Edition

a mutual promise or compact between two parties for a future marriage. The word imports as much as giving one's troth; that is, true faith, or promise. Betrothment amounts to the same with what is called by civilians and canonists sponsalia, or "espousals," sometimes desponsation, and by the French fiançailles.
