BOIEMUM

Volume 3 · 71 words · 1823 Edition

in Ancient Geography, a part of Germany, surrounded with the Montes Sudeti (Ptolemy); now called Bohemia. It took its name from the Boii, a people of Gaul, who removed thither before Caesar's expedition into that country, (Caesar); though he seems to err in the name. The Boii were afterwards driven out by the Marcomanni, and settled in the west of Vin-delicia, which was afterwards called Bayern, and hence the name Bavaria.
