a considerable town of Asia, and capital of a province of the same name in the Russian empire, with a strong castle, a citadel, and an archbishop's see. The country about it is very fertile in all sorts of fruits, corn, and pulse. It carries on a great trade in furs, and furnishes wood for the building of ships. The fortress is built of stone; but the town is of wood. The inhabitants amount to 17,500. Besides several schools, it has a university, founded in 1803. E. Long. 49° 23'. N. Lat. 55° 38'.
