the capital town in the island of Minorca, in the Mediterranean, with a new harbour. This, with the whole island, was taken by General Stanhope and the confederate fleet in 1708, and ceded to Great Britain by the treaty of Utrecht in 1713; but it was taken by the French, after a brave defence, in 1756, and restored by the peace. In 1782, it was taken by the Spaniards, and confirmed to them at the subsequent peace. It is 27 miles west of Port-Mahon, E. Long. 3° 30'. N. Lat. 39° 58'.
