a duchy in the circle of Westphalia, in Germany, and subject to the king of Prussia since 1815. It is divided into two parts by the Rhine, and is about 40 miles in length from east to west, and 20 in breadth from north to south. It is a fine agreeable country. The towns are Cleves, the capital, Calcar, Gennet, Santen, Orsoy, Bureck, and Greit. These lie on the left side of the river. On the right, Daysburgh, Wese, Rees, and Emmerick. It contained 125,000 inhabitants in 1815. The inhabitants of the country are chiefly Catholics, those of the towns chiefly Protestants.
