a department of France, which comprises part of the ancient Limousin. It contains 2400 square miles, with 255,000 inhabitants. In the north it is mountainous, but the low grounds produce rye, barley, chestnuts, vines, &c. The mineral productions are pit coal, slate, limestone, iron, lead, copper, and antimony. The manufactures are inconsiderable. The principal rivers are the Dordogne, the Correze, and the Vezere. Tulle is the chief town.
