a duchy situated between E. Long. 21° 26' and between N. Lat. 56° 30' and 57° 20'. It is bounded by the river Dwina, which divides it from Livonia on the north; by Lithuania, on the east; by Samogitia, on the south, and by the Baltic sea on the west; being 120 miles long and 30 broad. This duchy duchy was formerly independent, and elected their own duke; but it is now subject to Russia.
