It is thought to have received its name from being formerly a park or shelter for deer; and what makes this supposition more probable is, that the arms of the town consist of a buck couchant in a park. It is very ancient, having been a royal borough in the time of Edward the Confessor. At present it is a handsome town, and sends two members to parliament.
