called also DIAPHONICS, the consideration of the properties of refracted sound, as it passes through different mediums. The word is formed from the Greek δια, peri, "through," which intimates a passage, and ακοή, "I hear;" q. d. the consideration of the passage of the sounds we hear. See Acoustics.
