a city of Polish Prussia, in the palatinate of Marienburg, situated in E. Long. 20° 0' N. Lat. 54° 15', on a bay of the Baltic sea, called the Frischhafft, near the mouth of the Vistula. The town is large, populous, and very well built. It is divided into two parts, called the old and new town, which are both of them very well fortified. The old town has a handsome tower, with a good college. The place has a considerable trade, especially in cheese, butter, and corn. It is seated in a campaign level like Holland, very fruitful and populous. The inhabitants are partly Lutherans and partly Roman Catholics.
