a rich fortified town of Germany, in the circle of Westphalia, and duchy of Cleves. It carries on a good trade with the Dutch, and both Protestants and Catholics have the free exercise of their religion. The streets are neat and regular, and the houses tolerably built. It was taken by the French in 1672, but not retained. Since 1815 it has been subject to the king of Prussia. It is seated near the Rhine. F. Long. 5. 29. N. Lat. 52. 5.
