a department in the south of France. The north part which lies among the Cevennes is rugged and barren; but the south part is fertile and populous. It contains mines of copper, lead, iron, and pit coal. The whole number of inhabitants in 1815 was 322,000, of whom about one half were Protestants. Nismes is the chief town.
