a large island of the Pacific ocean, lying between 1° S. Lat. and 2° N. Lat. and between 125° and 128° E. Long. It belongs to the Dutch; but but does not produce any of the fine spices, though it lies in the neighbourhood of the spice islands. The natives are fierce and cruel savages.
