GRANTHAM

Volume 10 · 112 words · 1823 Edition

a town of Lincolnshire, 110 miles N. from London, situated on the river Witham. It is supposed to have been a Roman town by the remains of a castle which have been formerly dug up here. It is governed by an alderman and 12 justices of the peace, a recorder, a coroner, &c. Here is a fine large church with a stone spire, one of the loftiest in England, being 288 feet high, and, by the deception of the sight, seems to stand awry. Here is a free-school, where Sir Isaac Newton received his first education, besides two charity-schools. It contained 3646 inhabitants in 1811. W. Long. 1. 37. N. Lat. 52.
