a sea-port town in the county of Durham. It is commodiously seated on a promontory, and is almost encompassed by the sea. It is an ancient corporation, governed by a mayor and aldermen, with other subordinate officers. It is a pretty large, but poor place, and had 1047 inhabitants in 1811.
