HETERODOX

Volume 10 · 50 words · 1823 Edition

in Polemical Theology, something that is contrary to the faith or doctrine established in the true church. The word is formed of the Greek ἱστιαῖος; a compound of ἱστιαῖος, "alter," and ἰστιαῖος, "opinion." Thus, we say a heterodox opinion, a heterodox divine, &c. The word stands in opposition to orthodox.
