Honourary is sometimes understood of a person who bears or possesses some post or title, only for the name's sake, without doing anything of the functions belonging to it, or receiving any advantage from it: thus we say honourary counsellors, honourary fellows, &c.

Honourary is also used for a lawyer's fee, or a salary given to public professors in any art or science.
