Dr Lawrence, a very learned English divine in the 16th century, who, during the persecution under Queen Mary, retired with other Protestant refugees to Zurich. He returned on the accession of Queen Elizabeth; and was made president of Magdalene college, Oxford, dean of Gloucester, and then dean of Winchester. He was a great and general scholar, an able linguist, and a deep divine; and published, 1. De religiosis conservatis et reformatis, de quo primat regum. 2. De ratione interpretandi auctores. 3. Optimates sive de nobilitate, ejusque origine. 4. Sermons, and other works. He died in 1590.
