HYPOBOLE

Volume 11 · 80 words · 1823 Edition

or Subjection, (from ὑπό, and ἀπόλλω, I cast,) in Rhetoric, a figure, so called, when several things are mentioned, that seem to make for the contrary side, and each of them refuted in order. This figure, when complete, consists of three parts; a proposition, an enumeration of particulars with their answer, and a conclusion. Thus Cicero, upon his return from banishment, vindicates his conduct in withdrawing so quietly, and not opposing the faction that ejected him. See Oratory, No 81.
