JALEMUS

Volume 11 · 47 words · 1823 Edition

in antiquity, a kind of mournful song, used upon occasion of death, or any other affecting accident. Hence the Greek proverb had their original, ἐκεῖνοι ὑπερβαίνουσιν, or ἐκεῖνοι ὑπερβαίνουσιν, i.e. more sad or colder than a jalemus, as the ancient expression, worthy to be ranked among jalemuses.
