a town of the county of Fife in Scotland, two miles to the north-east of Kinghorn. It is a royal borough, the seat of a presbytery, and gives the title of baron to the earl of Melville. The town is populous, well built, and extends a mile in length from east to west, enjoying a considerable trade by exporting its own produce and manufactures of corn, coal, linen, and salt. The population in 1811 was 3747.
