an ancient, handsome, and very strong town in Lower Alsace. It was formerly imperial, and belonged to Germany, till the treaty of Munster, when it was given up to France; but she lost it again in 1815. It is seated on the river Zurich, in a pleasant fertile country. It was severely bombarded by the allies in 1793, but they were obliged to raise the siege. E. Long. 8. 12. N. Lat. 49. 12.
